Saturday Run

The Saturday multi-team run meets this weekend in Escondido at Lake Hodges. Take I-15 north to Via Rancho Parkway (where the North County Fair is, for all you shoppers). Turn right and then make the very next right on Sunset Drive. Follow it to the end of the cul-de-sac and park in the small parking lot just below the freeway. This will be a great run around the dirt trails of lake Hodges. There should be plenty of parking on the street if the parking lot fills.

See you all there at 8:00 a.m. Thanks again go out to Coach Andrew Myette from Patrick Henry for putting these winter group runs together. We'll need help finding the nearest bagel shop when the run is over.

Happy New Year!

I am happy to report that I have purchased a new computer after my little homeowner misadventure, so I'm back in business. This website needs to be straightened out some, and you can expect to see some changes in the new year. A new look is on the horizon with new and simpler links, better archives, a much more user-friendly interface with your every day needs in mind. Sound cool? Stay tuned. In the meantime, there will be new updates on happenings in and around the running group this winter. Keep training and keep following us on this great journey that running gives us every day. It's a new year, so set some outstanding goals both short and long term, and lets get to work.

Check This Out!
We are somewhat famous, anyway. VS Athletics, one of the largest suppliers of team uniforms in the country has a video out promoting their "new" line of sublimated uniforms. Look who the center attraction is! Pretty exciting stuff.

Don't forget the banquet is this upcoming Wednesday at the Hall of Champions beginning at 6:00 p.m. This is a phenomenal evening not to be missed. Please let Coach McCarthy know how many family members are attending. I want everyone to be there. It's $15 per person, but if money is an issue, just discreetly let me know and I'll work something out. See you all Wednesday.

Girls Finish 3rd at CIF, Qualify for the State Championships

Sophomore Megan Gramlich had the best race of her young career finishing 9th at the CIF San Diego Section Championships at Morley Field to lead her girls team to a 3rd place finish. The top three teams move on to the state championships in Fresno this upcoming Thanksgiving weekend. Illness took it's toll on the Centurions, but the girls held on to a great team start to finish just ahead of a hard charging El Capitan to hold them off for the last qualifying spot. The team will regroup now and prepare for the state meet this week. Click the pictures below for Charles Hewett's great photos of the meet.

Friday the 13th at Morley Field!
A Few Rough Performances Prove Unlucky for the UC Varsity Squad

It was indeed a tough day for the Centurions at the Western League Finals this past Friday the 13th. A few key members performed somewhat flat making it a tough team day. Both the boys and girls JV squads put together one of the best team performances in several years, capping a great fall campaign with huge season-best performances. Individual performance breakdowns with mile marks will be posted in a few days. It's time to REGROUP and form two of our traditionally great varsity teams as we prepare to race the CIF division 3 championships this Saturday November 21 at Morley Field. Girls race at 9:05, boys race at 10:10. We need to see the entire team there cheering on our great team as we run to qualify for the state championships in Fresno the following week. Good luck.

Varsity Boys Narrowly Edged by La Jolla
Sophomore Riess Haslam Wins Race in League Season Best Time of 15:41

La Jolla narrowly edged the boys varsity squad today 27-30 when the flu bug caused a few key members of the team to miss their season best marks in this highly anticipated showdown among league rivals. La Jolla's trio of superstars took the pace out very quickly, but were expertly shadowed by sophomore Riess Haslam who covered every move and eventually ran a menacingly quick last mile to pull away for the win in a season best mark of 15:41 for the Morley Field layout. The JV boys were absolutely stellar in placing 1-12, routing the Vikings, virtually every member of the young team notching their best mark of the season on the Western League course.

Check out the results above. Compare the 1 mile and 2 mile times from the last few weeks, and notice why you all improved so much. What made the coaching staff so proud was the extraordinary team effort throughout the race. Notice the tight pack at 1 and 2 miles! This is the beginning of an unbelievable future for these great athletes. The girls team did virtually the same, leading a tight pack from start to finish and thoroughly dominating the race unchallenged. These great young teams will surely create a legacy here at UC in the upcoming years.

UC Fan Club Shirts are Finally Here!
Thank you all for your continued patience and support at the meets, even without your official fan club gear. Well, fret no more! The Fan Club shirts are here and ready to be put on display as we go up against rival La Jolla this coming Wednesday. Let's show up in force and cheer on our great teams as we attempt to dismantle the Vikings in our last dual meet before the championship season. Don't forget your $10 for these awesome 100% cotton one-of-a-kind fan club necessities so you can properly chase the Centurions around the Morley Field course.

Teamwork Carries UC to Victory Over Scripps!
Patience and belief in the team carried all three UC teams to victory today over Scripps Ranch, a team that went for it early, only to end up overwhelmed by a relaxed and ready UC squad. This would be the case in the boys varsity, JV and girls races today at Morley Field. Check out the results below to see how well you did. It was a great day and proved that we are poised for a great finish at the Western League Championships in two weeks.

JV (Now Varsity) Boys Nearly Pull Off a Stunner!
Severely depleted by injuries and illness, a shorthanded boys varsity team nearly pulled off a great victory Wednesday against league rivals St. Augustine in the first Western League dual meet of the 2009 season. Without number one runner Riess Haslam and number two Charlie Hewett dropping off the front with a bizarre illness, the JV boys responded with one of the most stunning last mile performances in UC history. Clearly out of the team competition with only a mile to go, the JV boys that were moved up to varsity at the last minute to fill the empty spots brought the score to a UC advantage with literally only meters to go. The huge effort weighed heavily at the last possible moment and the varsity Centurions were narrowly edged at the line for a tough one point loss. It was a great effort by the up-and-coming varsity athletes in their first competition carrying the torch for the school. The girls team? An absolute slaughter of the OLP Pilots that saw the UC girls finish 1-2-3-4-7 without number one Jessy Hansen. Sophomore Megan Gramlich captured her first varsity win with a huge PR that she made look easy. Click the photo below to see Charlie Hewett Sr.'s awesome photos.

The Mission Hills Showdown is happening this Saturday night beginning at 7:00 p.m. with the first of five races that are sure to be fun for all of us. The boys JV start the night off, followed at 7:25 p.m. by the girls JV squad. Boys frosh-soph is at 7:55, then the all exciting varsity races will close out the evening with the girls at 8:20 and the boys at 8:50. This is a new meet that has enjoyed a great response and will host a large number of schools from all over Southern California, including my alma mater, Estancia HS from Costa Mesa (class of '82!). Click on the header above to go to the meet website for more detailed information. I'll have last minute information on this site before we go, and photos and results after the meet.

IMPORTANT: WE WILL BE MEETING AT UCHS IN FRONT OF THE GYM AT 4:30 ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON. I AM PAYING FOR ALL OF YOU TO RUN, SO UNLESS I'VE TALKED TO YOU ABOUT NOT RUNNING, ASSUME THAT YOU ARE IN.

This might be one of the most exciting races that we participate in all season. Let's have a great time and a huge support crew as well. We need drivers, so please plan on coming to watch your son or daughter run. Thanks and good luck. Training is going well, so expect some PR's on Saturday night!

2009 WOODBRIDGE RESULTS!

September 16, 2009

Woodbridge Invitational 2009 is Coming Up This Weekend!

The 38th Annual Woodbridge Classic Cross Country Invitational is on hand this weekend at Woodbridge High School in Irvine, California. This great meet is proudly the largest single day invitational in California and the Western U.S. with over 180 schools participating and 12,000 athletes. This nighttime format adds tremendous excitement as well, making it one of the greatest series of races that you will ever see. The meet is broken down into four divisions with over 40 schools in each, with each division broken down further into grade-level races throughout the evening. The event is capped off with the Invitational sweepstakes races, which highlight the best individuals and teams in California and nearby states. It is a thrilling night for both athlete and spectator, and one of the major events that we look forward to all year. Please join us as we celebrate the season at this spectacular event. All parents are invited to help support the team. We will need drivers to transport all of our athletes, so please come if you can. We are also reprising our great pot-luck feast from last year, so be sure to sign up with our captains for a food item to bring to the meet.

A great night full of great memories.

Remember last year? Click on the above photo for a great photo set of the races from Woodbridge 2008. It was a great night for the UC cross country team, highlighted by Mac Fleet's great victory in the Boys Seeded Invitational race featuring some of the very best runners in the U.S. Our team is improving rapidly, and should enjoy great success at this year's meet. Don't miss it. Everyone is invited (WE NEED DRIVERS!)

Click on the page above for a full-size printable information sheet for this weekend's meet. It will be another great event, and we hope that all parents can make it to what is now the largest single day cross country invitational in the Western U.S. We will be having another pot-luck food extravaganza set up for the kids to eat after they race. Please make sure you sign up before friday with the team captains to bring a dish.

Varsity/JV Race Well at Mustang
Nearly Entire Team Participates at Various Distances

The boys and girls varsity squads ran nearly intact teams on Friday to highlight the performances for the Centurions at the Mustang Invitational at Rohr Park. Sophomore Riess Haslam led the boys varsity team with a sixth place finish in the Blue Large School race, followed closely by seniors Charlie Hewett in 8th and Ben Booker in 17th. It was an exciting afternoon which saw a huge sea of UC rookies testing out their racing legs for the first time. The course was a series of flat and rolling grass fields with a few short hills and dirt horse trails. The girls varsity team finished a strong 4th place behind the outstanding performances of sophomores Jessy Hansen and Megan Gramlich. More results and story synopsis to follow. Something Big is Happening!

The 2009 edition of the Vaquero Stampede saw one of the greatest transformations of a team in recent UC history. The girls team, seemingly coming out of nowhere with nothing but a flock of eager young "newbies", shocked the coaches, the fans, and the rest of the field with a dazzling performance of varsity caliber running. Skipping mediocrity, this group of underclassmen (women), when comparing to last year's performances, literally went to the very top, clocking the best overall team showing (runners 1-5) in the 11 year history of our participation in this event! (Click on the picture above to see Charlie Hewett's great photos of the day).

Mac Fleet is State Champion!
Wins the 1600 Meter Event in Near Record Time

Mac ran arguably the greatest race of his storied career yesterday at the California State Track and Field Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, California, finishing with the number two time in the US this year and the second best mark in San Diego Section history narrowly missing the county mark by less than half a second. Running 1:58 for the second 800 meters and completing near 3:00 flat for the final 3 laps, Mac charged away from one of the finest fields of milers ever assembled in a state final. Consider that the final medalist in sixth place had to complete the 4 lap event in 4:10 and change, leaving Travis Edwards, James Brady and several other state leaders in the dust and empty handed at 4:11, an outstanding mark in itself. Read this great STORY about Mac's impressive victory. Sheree Shea completed a great night of running for UC with a final exclamation on her high school running career adding another school record to an already stellar list of UC record holders. Check out both race videos below to see two of the finest races at one of the greatest meets in California history. No small statement. We are very proud of both of you and wish you the best of luck in furthering an already unforgettable career.

Boys Win, Girls Tie vs. Mira Mesa!

Yikes! 68-68. It can't get any closer. When they're this close, every one point counts. It was a great day with great weather and great fans that witnessed an exciting day of track and field. The boys victory was by a slim five point margin that easily could have turned the other way had Mira Mesa not gone out of the zone on the first event of the day, the 4 x 100 meter relay. These things happen, which keep the meets exciting. Results coming soon. (Click on the picture below to see Charles Hewett's great photos of the day).

Mac gets a little press time from the ESPN Rise guys, and earns this week's Athlete of the Week. A great honor and a great little video. I'm not sure if this is an archive file, so click and watch before it disappears. Slide the video bar to about 3:20. He's the last story.

WOW!

Mac Fleet Wins Boston Indoor Games. PR's with 4:09.06 for a FULL MILE!
An electric sold out crowd watched one of the most exciting boys mile races in years Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center indoor track facility for the Reebok Boston Indoor Games. Twelve of the best high school milers in the United States were invited to compete against each other in what would be the greatest field of athletes this season. Relive the race and the meet by clicking below. It was a great night that saw professional American greats set two American records and Australian pole vaulter Steven Hooker (Olympic gold medalist) narrowly miss a world record attempt. Such was the energy of the meet and many believed the boys mile was the most exciting race of the night!

Italy Update!

Second Italy Meeting Next Week?
A number of students have said to me that they are IN, so the powers that be have begun seriously putting the details together (we are meeting tonight). We would like to have a group meeting next Wednesday? (is that too early? Will we have to meet the week after?). I'll need some help here. Would somebody be willing to host the next group for a light (?) dinner and Italian cultural night next Wednesday, February 4? Or do we have it the week after. Send me an email (see Contact Coach McCarthy below)

What's Going On in 2009?

Winter Training

Running Camp

ITALY

Winter Training has begun!

Use the calendars that I gave you to figure out your weekly mileage totals through January and February. Be ready to run 200's on Mondays, longer runs on Tuesdays, and Tempo/long runs on Thursdays. Saturdays are with Patrick Henry and Cathedral (and others) at 8:00 a.m. around the county.

Click on the photo above for the Saturday Run Schedule.

The Saturday runs are for EVERYBODY, not just the varsity athletes. You should be there if you expect to improve this season.

Running Camp 2009 is scheduled for August 9-16 at the Fir Group Campground in the Sequoia National Forest (just across from the Stony Creek Lodge). Plan ahead and get these dates on your summer calendar so you won't miss this.

This "NEW" site is the one chronicled in the running camp video (linked below). It's an exciting new place that has wonderful facilities, a beautiful creek to soak and soothe, and remains a site by itself, away from the hundreds of other campers in the other group sites.

The runs will remain the same, always with a few fun new additions to keep the camp interesting and invigorating. Don't miss this year.

The Fifth biannual Italy trip is currently on the books for this summer, tentatively scheduled for June 16 - July 7. This will be a fabulous whirlwind tour of the "bel paese", sure to create memories and experiences that will last with you forever. I will show you Italy from the "inside", introducing you to the country like no tour group can ever do.

We are having an informal Italy meeting next THURSDAY January 15 at 6:00 p.m. at the home of Doug and Jo Anne Powell (Devin and Morgan's mom)

We will have some Italian snacks (let's try to make this an Italian Potluck), imparare un pochino della lingua italiana, and go over the highlights of the trip. We will continue to learn about Italy and plan our trip at these meetings every 3-4 weeks until we go in June (at different locations: any volunteers?)

Mac Fleet is State Champion!
Girls Team Finishes Fourth!

The unranked and unheralded girls team finished fourth place yesterday at the California State Championships in Fresno beating seven of the top ten pre-race ranked teams in the division and equaling the best UC team finish in the 22 year history of this event. The greatest team effort by our "front four" which included two unprecedented top-10 finishes by Sheree Shea and Jessy Hansen, was very quickly followed up by frosh Lindsey Williams who sealed a top four team performance with her best race by over one minute, an almost impossible task at such a large meet. The girls were composed and ready to perform, outpacing even the best prognosticators in achieving this stunning finish. Devin and Morgan Cowick, consistent members of the fab four, turned in their best performances of the season to help this team run it's very best when it counted the most: the State Championships.

Mac Fleet overcame some mid race "jitters" to pull away from some of this countries very best runners, running what could be considered the greatest race of his stellar career. The division three championship was billed as perhaps the race of the day pitting Fleet against arguably California's best runner Chris Schwartz, ranked fourth best in the nation. Early on Schwarz was there in the lead, along with several of Cali's best, keeping a relatively tight pack together through two and a half miles. A decisive move by Mac at the top of the "camel humps" gave him a jump on the field with only about a half mile to go, but Isaac Chavez, the Southern Section champion quickly closed and it became a two man race with the finish nearly in sight. Three hundred meters out and high up on his toes with one final blast, Mac pulled clear of Chavez and celebrated a state championship victory in front of the thousands of excited screaming fans at the finish.

It was a great day for UC with four athletes finishing in the top ten and earning All-State honors. Sheree Shea finished in a school record 17:51 to finish fourth, closely followed by Jessy Hansen who literally inched by Campolindo freshman Carrie Verdon to earn the final top 10 spot. In the boys race, behind Mac's great victory, Guadalupe Gonzalez ran the best race of his career with his tenth place finish, narrowly beating out two competitors at the line for the coveted spot on the podium.

  MORE COWBELL!
UC Fan Club Ready For State
The 14 boys and girls of the UC varsity squad are ready to line up at state on Saturday. More importantly, however, is the readiness of the cowbell-toting fan club led by senior parents Sandy Scherling and Janna Fleet. Need a fan club shirt? A cowbell? Not to worry, because these bell ringers have the right stuff to outfit you for the job. Bring a big heart and a strong arm to Fresno, and ring those bells loudly.

State Meet Information

The UC cross country team will be meeting at 6:00 a.m. Friday morning in front of the gym to head up to Fresno for the State Championships. We have a large group of parents and athletes participating, so we will need to car-pool as much as possible to avoid taking a ridiculous amount of cars up to the meet. Please do not be late. Athletes: be sure to bring ALL of your racing equipment, including an extra pair of racing socks to replace after the warm-up if it is raining. It will be cold, so bring also your warmups and any other cold weather gear that you think you might need.

Please check the rooming list below to see who is coming to the meet. In addition to the 13 rooms that I have reserved, the Scherlings and Bookers have two rooms, and the Powells and Dennis Cowick have rooms in another hotel.

Here is a partial itinerary:
Meet at 6:00 a.m. Friday November 28 and depart shortly afterward
Arrive at Gorman at approximately 8:45. Meet Coach McCarthy
Breakfast in Bakersfield at Baker's Square (map) on Ming Ave. (head WEST from I-99)
Arrive at Woodward Park between 1:00-1:30
Buy anything/everything at State Meet concessions
Jog Course/very light workout/final preparations
3:30 check into hotel
5:00 dinner at Luna's Pizzeria in downtown Clovis
7:00 return to hotel/relax
10:00 lights out.

Race time is 10:40 a.m. for the boys and 12:15 for the girls. We will make a plan for Saturday morning depending on the predicted rain.

I will be out of town all day Thursday, but I can be reached at 714-546-4410 during the day and 714-593-5590 in the evening (sorry, no cell phone yet) if someone needs some last minute information. Dale will coordinate all the drivers and carpooling on Friday. DON'T FORGET ANYTHING!

Results will be posted shortly after the races at the link below

Boys and Girls Finish Second at CIF San Diego Section Championships
Each Team Earns State Meet Bid

Upholding one of the greatest UC cross country traditions, both the boys and girls teams earned a trip to the California State Championships next weekend continuing a streak of more than 10 years. In a loaded field of 22 teams in the division 3 race, the boys ran a gutsy race up front and at the same time a cautious race in the early going with the 3-6 runners. As the race progressed, our power punch up front would pay off with a 1-2 finish. Senior Mac Fleet, running the fastest time of the day for all runners, easily ran away from the field to capture his first CIF title. Next over the hill, to the roar of an excited crowd, was senior Guad Gonzalez, all smiles and punctuating a stellar season with his finest race yet in finishing second. Rounding out the top 15 in the race, frosh Riess Haslam led the charge through the deep field, moving up to 3rd for UC, clicking off the second-fastest freshman time of the day. Close behind Riess was junior Charlie Hewett, earning his first ever CIF top-20 finish. Senior Adam Scherling, junior Ben Booker, and senior Aaron Cordoba closed up the UC ranks to carry the team to a second place podium finish. The team prepares now for the big prize, the state championships held at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Western League Champions!
Boys and Girls Win Team Titles

On a VERY warm November afternoon, the boys and girls teams put together a great tandem effort, bringing home the Western League Title for both teams for the 5th or 6th straight year (lost count).   It came about through a combined series of exceptional individual performances, together with some pretty gutsy efforts out on the Morley Field layout.   It was a tough day.   A special congratulations go out to the entire team for a wonderful season.   In addition, we salute our grade level champions:   Jessy Hansen (fr.), Riess Haslam (fr.), Devin Cowick (jr.), and Mac Fleet (sr.) who won his third consecutive Western League Individual Title.   Results and Pictures below.   Thanks also to Janna Fleet and Sandy Scherling for their continued Fan Club leadership and support, Haide Urias, our wonderful manager who often ran the show, and our phenomenal photographers who were there for us everywhere and every week:   Charles Hewett, Gary Hassen, John Scherling and George Kerber.   Enjoy this website as I give it a major update in the next few days with much more league championship coverage, and team information for the CIF Championships coming up next Saturday.

Save the Date:   The Cross Country Banquet will be Wednesday, December 17 at 6:00 p.m. at the San Diego Hall Of Champions in Balboa Park (near the Air-Space Museum).   Don't miss this wonderful night of memories, awards, and a great exclamation point to the 2008 season.   Congratulations UC on earning two more banners for the gym, upholding a great UC tradition of cross country excellence.

League Finals Friday!

The final championship meet is here!   Get ready for the best race of the season.   The meet begins with the girls JV race at 2:00, followed by the girls Varsity at 2:30, the boys Varsity at 3:00, and finally the boys JV at 3:30.   Parents, don't miss this.   It's Friday after all.   It will be an exciting day with all of the league's athletes tossed into one race, more or less.   The awards ceremony will immediately follow the last race, so please don't plan on taking your son/daughter home right away.   The entire team needs to participate in the ceremony and cheer on the team as we accept the awards that everyone earns.

Good luck to all.   Sleep well, eat well, and make this important to you.   It is very important to the team.

We will be leaving school at 12:15 p.m., so I need all drivers ready to depart at that time.   Thanks so much for your continued help and support.
