Ran Across This Today! (From the "Where Are They Now" dept.)

There's a future out there for some of our fabulous cross country alums. This year, Christina Buckley is a senior at Harvard. Check out her performance with the Harvard Radcliffe Veritones. Christina graduated from UC in 2007 after competing at CIF and State all four of her high school years and helping lead the girls to the 2006 CIF team title. Hard work: Priceless.

Don't forget that we have practice Friday morning at 8:30, rain or shine. If it's raining, then we'll be there.

Track Practice at 8:30 a.m. This Week

See you at the track for this week's wonderful array of track workouts that we have in store for you. We will be working hard Monday AND Tuesday, so prepare yourselves mentally and physically (eat and sleep a little extra) to succeed all week. We will be meeting at Mission Bay on Wednesday at the playground at 9:30 (Yes! an extra hour of sleep) for a short/medium recovery run and then our annual track team picnic/barbeque and capture the flag game. Bring a side dish and a drink for the picnic (everyone bring something this time!).

Congratulations to all of you that competed at Trabuco Hills and the Elite Invitational at Mt. Miguel. We had some wonderful season and LIFETIME PR's at both locations. Results are up at ATHLETIC.NET

Our first race is at 6:42 p.m. which means that we need to be there by 5:15 which means we need to leave by 4:00, which means we need to MEET AT UC AT 3:45 p.m. Easy math. Don't be late. Let's have a great week.

Parents: I need you to help drive to this great event, so plan on spending the evening with us watching some great races and eating great food. We should be home around 11:30 p.m.

Mt. Carmel Distance Carnival Entries

All races with starting times are on the PDF file above. Plan on being at Mt. Carmel HS at least one and a half hours before your race. Two hours would be better. If you are running the 4 x 800 or the girls 1600, then we will be meeting at UC at 10:00 a.m. Boys 1600 runners and others racing afterwards can just meet us at Mt. Carmel, but be sure to be there with plenty of time before your race. Everyone is welcome to come with the first "wave" at 10:00.

Spike Night This Wednesday at Movin Shoes

We are meeting at 5:30 p.m. at Movin Shoes in Pacific Beach for an informative evening on spikes and everything they do for us, what to buy, what fits, what looks great, and what lasts. If you haven't bought spikes yet, or you just want to hang out with the team, come on down tomorrow night and meet Carl Brandt, the owner for a great evening of entertaining track equipment talk. Get to know this store because they are the most knowledgable in the city on all things running and racing. Click the logo at left for store information and directions.

Believe me, you are there, so check it out. Most importantly, our schedule is now there (and copied below). There is also a convenient tab to click to the Cross Country schedule and season. Yes, all the cross country meets are here too.

New Website Coming Soon!

Look for a much more user-friendly site where you can find exactly what your looking for because it's located exactly where it should be. Imagine that! Divided into the five most important sections that make up our team, you will have handy a much better tool to keep following the great athletes at University City throughout the years. Saturday Run

The Saturday multi-team run meets this weekend in Escondido at Lake Hodges. Take I-15 north to Via Rancho Parkway (where the North County Fair is, for all you shoppers). Turn right and then make the very next right on Sunset Drive. Follow it to the end of the cul-de-sac and park in the small parking lot just below the freeway. This will be a great run around the dirt trails of lake Hodges. There should be plenty of parking on the street if the parking lot fills.

See you all there at 8:00 a.m. Thanks again go out to Coach Andrew Myette from Patrick Henry for putting these winter group runs together. We'll need help finding the nearest bagel shop when the run is over.

Saturday Run at San Elijo Lagoon

Take the 5 freeway north to Lomas Santa Fe Drive. Turn left after the exit and head west toward the beach. At the bottom of the hill, turn right on North Cedros Ave. at the Solana Beach Train Station (pictured left). Drive to the north end of the parking lot. We will be there at 8:00 a.m. sharp. Don't be late. Plan on going to Einsteins Bagels after an EPIC run in the lagoon.

January 7, 2011

Happy New Year.

The track season will be here before we know it. The key word for this pre-season of base training is GROUPS. We will be running in them on key days: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Over time, we will know the strengths and weaknesses of each athlete in our group, and this will keep us together, almost magnetically and magically. What group are YOU in? Get in one, and keep your mileage progressing according to the schedule. Do not miss a single week.

Tomorrow's Saturday run is in the Blue Sky Preserve in Poway. We will be meeting at the park at the intersection of Valle Verde and Rancho Bernardo Road. Take the 15 freeway north and exit Rancho Bernardo Road going east. Continue east for a couple of miles and you will arrive at a stoplight at Valle Verde. Turn left into the park at the corner. We are meeting there at 8:00 a.m. sharp! I hope to see a great group tomorrow to run with. This is one of my absolute favorite runs and I will be running the Lake Poway segment with a large group. Get in it!

December 23, 2010

Happy Holidays!
We are off to a GREAT start. The run schedule for next week will be: Monday: 8:00 a.m. at PQ Canyon with the other high schools (this is the normal Saturday run), Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday: 8:30 at UC, Friday (new years eve): 8:00 a.m. at the Bay with the other "Saturday Run" team. Have a great training week. I will see you all hopefully on Friday at the Bay after our EPIC bike tour of Central/Northern California. Remember: It only works if we ALL buy into it. We are a great team and I've seen more team camaraderie than I've seen in years. Impressive.

Footlocker Weekend!
Last Minute Information for the Upcoming Cranium/Footlocker Extravaganza. Not to be Missed!

It looks like we won't be leaving from the school on Friday until 4:00 p.m. because of some late-afternoon obligations from runners and families. So, we will meet at school in front of the gym at 3:50 and try to leave by 4:00. This means we will encounter a little traffic along the way, but we will have the run out of the way and will just proceed to my parent's home in Costa Mesa. We will have dinner there and relax (sort of) with a mind-blowing game of Cranium to start the weekend off right. The adult team, with several new highly intellectual recruits, will be looking to erase their embarrassing defeat of a year ago and return to the podium to start off another great streak of epic victories. On Saturday morning, the last seeded race is at 10:40 a.m. so we should be home realistically before 2:00.

There are beds for the adults. The kids should bring a sleeping bag and claim the best floor space available. We have 16 athletes going (17 including me: Yes, I'm running the race!) so we need adults to drive and participate. Please let me know asap that you plan on going so we can make arrangements to get everyone there. Don't be shy about staying at my parent's home. They love having us over and we'll find room for everyone. My email:

State Meet Information
(CIF State Meet Website)

UC Travel Information:

•We will meet at UC at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, November 26. I will not be here, so Kelly and Jessy Hansen will be coordinating our group. I will meet you in Fresno at the park. From UC, we travel to lovely Gorman, CA (where the season started on our way to camp in August!) to meet up with Riess and Jennifer Haslam and we'll eat breakfast here at the relatively new Ranch House Restaurant. We have a reservation at 9:00, but I'm sure they'll take us in any time.

•From here we travel to Woodward Park, Fresno, where you will meet me at 1:00 -1:15 p.m. (I will be driving down from my brother's house in Pleasanton). Here we pick up meet information, jog around the course, buy whatever State Meet "goodies" we deserve, and then laugh and relax as we go over any pre-race instructions we may have forgotten about.

We have a reservation for an early dinner at the really cool Italian place in Clovis at 4:30, so we will need to head there after we leave the park. After dinner, we will head over to the Holiday Inn to check in and relax.

•Return to the hotel for an early evening and final relax time before our big day. The coaches will be heading out to arguably the most important event of the weekend: The Unofficial Official Coaches Meeting sponsored by VS Athletics here.

Here we will do our necessary shake-out run, strides, and stretching.

•From here we head to the home of Steve and Tere Ross (my Mom) just down the hill. Several of the Pleasanton Heat (kids from camp) will be joining us for this great weekend, including the upcoming epic Cranium battle.

•Click on the Footlocker logo at the top to see the official website for race times and entry information. We will have to get up pretty early to get to the meet on time (my mom lives 40 minutes from the course). Remember the "double secret" free parking area in the neighborhood behind the course.

•We should be home between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

•Does anyone still want to run who hasn't signed up yet? Registration went up on Sunday, from $15 to $35, but if you still want to run, it's worth it. You will need to register online (from site link/logo above). You don't want to miss the potentially epic Cranium match Friday night.

•Good Luck!

Riess Haslam and the Girls Team Qualify for the State Championships!

On a frighteningly cold, windy, and wet early Saturday morning. the boys and girls teams put together their best races of the season. Junior Riess Haslam overcame a maddening late season illness that kept him out of the league championship race to finish 6th in the boys division 2 championship at 8:30 a.m. this morning to qualify as an individual for the state championships next week in Fresno. Not to be outdone, the entire girls team, running their finest team race of the year, squeaked by Canyon Crest, a team that had soundly defeated the UC girls three weeks ago, to claim the third and final berth for the state meet next week. The boys team, despite running without Nathan Jumps who missed the entire week of school due to illness, and frosh star Kevin Kahru, finished an astounding 7th place out of 23 teams to complete their best outing of the fall season. Riess, being very patient after a slow first mile, charged to the lead after the tough climb up the Upas hill and roared back down through the central area of the course. Hot on his heels, the always formidable Western League runners retook command of the race, Riess holding on for an All-CIF finish in 6th. In the girls race, sophomores Sophia Volk and Shelby Huffaker charged into the top ten with our strong chase pack of Jessy Hansen, Ashley Charles, and Roxanne Esquivel in close pursuit. With Shelby, still feeling the illness she had carried for several weeks, falling off the pace, Jessy Hansen then led freshman superstar Ashley Charles roaring through the pack ahead to close the gap on the leaders. The girls would place three inside the top 15 (All-CIF). Shelby Huffaker hung on to 21st place with Megan Gramlich closing out the scoring for the team and narrowly edging Canyon Crest by three points! Whew!

More coming soon. Congratulation to all the athletes who competed today. We are very proud to see you perform your very best in the most important meet of the season.

December 4th Footlocker Western Regionals Sign Up Link
Click the banner above to sign up for the Footlocker race at the famous Mt. SAC cross country course in Walnut, CA. This will be a great weekend of grade level races, then we'll watch and cheer for our San Diego area athletes as they try to qualify for the National Championships in San Diego on December 11. These are the top athletes in the nation competing for a coveted trip to the national meet and a permanent notch on their running resume. We will be staying at my parent's home in Costa Mesa on Friday December 3, which will be the site of the 7th annual Cranium brain-off between the students and the adults. DO NOT miss this great event. We need adults to come too, so plan on taking part in this great weekend event. Click HERE for a recap of an epic Cranium battle a few years ago. WOW! Be sure to enter before November 20. The entry fee is super cheap at only $15, but goes up to $35 after the 20th. This is a great way to end our season, and everyone is welcome to come and participate.

A Look Back at 2005

This was the year of the freshmen with Mac Fleet, Masami Okada, Adam Scherling and Guadalupe Gonzalez among many others taking starring roles for the varsity squad. Injury would cut Mac's season a little short, but the boys would lay a foundation that eventually grew to superstardom by the time they were seniors.

The varsity boys roar through the mile mark in their dominating win against Scripps Ranch. Freshman Mac Fleet won the race in 16:37

Freshman Guad is only the sixth best frosh on the emerging team.
Senior Guad is 3rd best in San Diego County and tenth at state.
Freshman Macky wins the varsity meet at Morley Field against Scripps in 16:37
Senior Mac is county champion, state champion, and eventual national champion in track.

Western League Finals
Great results, but we still have work to do

The weather was perfect again for the league championship series of races yesterday, and the UC Centurions showed up ready to race as a team. This day would be an important day to test out the pack running techniques that we have been working on over the past month. Beginning the day's competition, the JV girls ran a near flawless race, working together as planned and beginning very patiently. Key to the course today would be the middle mile where no fans can help struggling runners through the quiet times that make them question their will to continue the struggle. Keeping together, these girls held their places and finished eight girls in the top 15 medal spots to highlight the day's performances. PR's were the order of the day as evidenced by the many blue and gold highlights on the team results above. For the girls varsity, a very fast first mile added a heap of stress and unfamiliar fatigue leading into mile two. Sophia Volk and Shelby Huffaker stayed strong and held their spot among the top 4 through the difficult second mile. Meanwhile, Jessy Hansen led a tight group of three with Ashley Charles and Roxanne Esquivel, sitting patiently on a large pack of Cathedral runners. Nearly catching our two team leaders, Jessy would charge into a 7th place finish, pulling Ashley to the 13th medal position and securing a time gap from runners 1-4 of a team best 33 seconds! This team now has a great chance to make it to the state championships. Who will be fifth for the team?

With race favorite junior Riess Haslam sitting out due to illness, the varsity boys charged on, seemingly overmatched, but not undetermined to carry the torch for the team. Several near PR's and a season best performance by junior Brandon Funk kept the Centurions in the race. The JV boys, running last, performed above all expectations, almost all of them registering huge personal records and securing the team overall victory. Hanging back at the start, sophomore Dan Cunningham and freshman Kevin Kahru patiently worked their way up through the leaders, taking charge of the race by the one and a half mile mark and running away with the one-two victory. Dan Cunningham, running the finest race of his young career, looked extremely strong over the last mile and roared to victory in one of the fastest JV winning times in years. One of the greatest feelings in our sport is to finish first and then look behind you as you walk/stumble through the finish chute and see your entire team right behind you. The JV boys put 9 runners in the top 20, all within eyesight of each other, and making a great statement about the strength of this team over the next several years. Congratulations to everyone that ran in the meet, and we look forward to growing as a team and building on that great legacy that is UC Cross Country.

Complete Results Here

Girls Varsity League Results from 2005

This team went on to finish second at CIF division 2 by only 1 point! (Results HERE). That disappointment inspired them to an 8th place finish at state, beating the CIF champion West Hills team.

Boys Varsity League Results from 2005

The boys team had a little tougher go of it at the 2005 CIF championship race. Frosh superstar Mac Fleet broke his foot in the CIF race and would not be able to compete at state. They ended up a disappointing 16th place at state, but senior Riley Booker was crowned as state champion.

League Championships Are Tomorrow Beginning at 2:00 p.m.

IMPORTANT: We will be LEAVING UC at 12:30, so all drivers will need to be at school in front of the gym at 12:20. Athletes: You will be checking in to period 5 and then leaving for the championship just FIVE minutes into the period. Ask your teachers what you will need to do to make up any work missed. Be a good student and take care of this. Plan on running well. Hydrate, eat a big breakfast, and bring an excited, positive attitude to the meet. GOOD LUCK!

Results from Saints/OLP: HOT!

This was not a bad meet for us. First and foremost, we ran really well as a team through the first pair of miles. Key to this grouping was our win over Monte Vista, who pummeled us at Jaguar. We still have a few groupings to tighten up, particularly on the boys side. Show up to win tomorrow. Everyone PR's at the league tomorrow!

Tough Meet vs. Cathedral, Scripps Close!

The course beat us up a little bit today, but there were signs of great racing despite the warmer temperatures. Congratulations to Shelby and Riess for charging a hard race up front with some of the best runners in the county. Take a good look at your splits above and try to figure out where the groups broke up. We must close this in as the season winds down. Everyone PR's at the league championship race on November 12 (next week would be nice too).

Jaguar Results HERE

It was an interesting day for us at Kit Carson Park on Friday. The hill was less of a problem than our starts for many of the Centurions on this day. Several athletes were able to move up through the field on the second half of the course and win medals. Congratulations. We must learn to start faster. The course pinched off and held many of you back way too far. Look at the results and understand what we need to do in order to finish in the top 3 at CIF. We would not have done it here, so there is much work to be done from ALL OF US!

Jaguar Invitational Information
Check out the top 25 times of all-time for our athletes on this course. Where will you fit in? Set a realistic goal, and GET ON THIS LIST!

Click on the image below to get a printable information sheet for the meet this Friday. We look forward to a great team day. Training has been going extremely well, so look for our boys and girls to race much closer together, looking for a much better team score. The hill on this course gives us a HUGE advantage because it is very much like the terrain that we've trained on in the canyons all summer. Look for some great individual performances as each team member competes for a chance to run on the top seven at the end of the season in the all-important championship races.

  Jaguar Invitational This Friday
This meet will be a great opportunity for varsity team experience running in a pack and an awesome chance for our younger teams to develop as great runners. This course is challenging, but we train harder than anyone else for just this type of terrain and hill climbing. Be ready for Friday's race by checking out the courses above. Color coding goes from GREEN to RED to BLUE to YELLOW. I will have more information in the next day or so. Also, click HERE for last year's results. It'll give you a good idea of what's to come and what it will take to win. Do your homework!

Mission Bay Today
We'll be at the Information Center at 12:30 after the PSAT test.

It's time for us to begin running more on grass, both for the soft surface and to prepare for our championship races that are held primarily on grass. Don't miss today's practice. We will be strengthening our fitness today, adding a few flying 60's to get us ready for faster starts and finishes. Can't make it today? Get out for 50-60 minutes on your own with some fast strides (6) afterward. Don't forget the 6 fabulous stretches.

Great Meet vs. La Jolla

We had some exciting improvement that you should all be proud of. Check the 2009 results (GIRLS, BOYS) for the second league meet from last year. Look at how much deeper we are getting (how many boys running under 19:00, how many girls under 22:00). There is a lot of blue and gold on the PR list. If we keep this up, we will make it to the state meet. We do need to work on our third mile. Look at your splits for each mile. Many of you are slowing down on the last mile. This is the easiest mile of the course, and although you are tired, you should be running it faster than mile 2. This is our goal for Cathedral in two weeks. Bigger PR's and better 3rd miles.

(Click on Gary Hassen's photos above to see a great photo set of the Hoover dual meet)

Hoover Destruction!
The Hoover boys and girls, rebuilding and victims of illness, were overwhelmed by the UC armada that flew through the Morley Field course for the first dual league meet of the season. The day proved to be a great opener for our team on the league layout, with personal records achieved by a majority of the athletes competing on the team (see results below, and compare to our league opener last year). We will need to step it up a notch as we compete against our league rival La Jolla this Thursday on the same course. We need a huge bell-ringing crowd to support our team as we take on a strong Vikings squad in our quest for the league crown.

(Click on Gary Hassen's photos above to see a great photo set of the Woodbridge meet)

This Just In!
Check out these great photos of the Woodbridge Invitational run at Estancia High School on September 18. It was a great night of racing on the Orange County bluffs, highlighted by our great freshman boys team finishing in the top five among the best teams in Southern California. For some, it was the first foray into the three mile distance. This would be a great practice meet for upcoming league competition.

October 8, 2010

Directions to San Elijo Run
Saturday's run is at 8:00 a.m. at the Solana Beach Train Station. This is super easy to get to and we will have one of the best runs of our season on the great trails of the the lagoon and the Rancho Santa Fe trails and golf course.

Take the 5 Freeway north to Lomas Santa Fe, just past the fairgrounds. Turn left and drive down west and down the hill. Turn right (north) on North Cedros, which is right at the train station. Continue north until you get to the far end of the the parking lot. Park and meet everyone there. This run is soft, flat and on great trails and wood chips, so don't miss this. See you all there.

Morley Field Here We Come!

Today was a good start for the Centurion cross country team on the first league dual meet of the 2010 season. Check the 2009 results (HERE) for this same first meet last year. You will see a much better start this year with a much deeper team. We still have much work to do, however, as we move on to tougher league competition ahead of us. Today was difficult to find a rhythm because our opponent wasn't very strong, but this will remedy itself in the coming weeks. We will need to toughen up and be more aggressive, working much more closely as a team (touch test!) to defeat our more formidable opponents on the horizon. I look forward to it, and I know you will enjoy this course as we improve each week. Some of the mile/2 mile marks are a little off, but look at the groups clustered together as they came through these marks. More of you should be much closer. NO ONE runs alone. EVER! We'll work on this.

October 6, 2010

Check Out the Morley Field Course!

It's time for some serious fun. The league meets begin tomorrow and we are ready to start the season off with a great series of races. Don't miss this first installment (first of five times on the course) of the famous layout at Morley Field. We race Hoover tomorrow, a school with great cross country tradition and a history of champions. We will have a chance to warm up around the course and really learn it well (we'll have to in case one of you is leading!). All of the boys will race together, giving us a great chance to see where we stand, at 3:10 p.m. The girls follow at 3:40. Remember that there are a number of races in between, so keep an eye out for your athlete, and ring those bells.

Parents Meeting Next Wednesday

It's finally here! We are going to have our annual UC Cross Country parents meeting where we'll talk about every topic you can possibly think of regarding this great sport that we do. Bring your favorite potluck dish (or bottle of wine) and we'll make a great evening of it, but don't bring your athlete. The agenda will cover:

•Season Schedule
•Injuries/Health Issues
•UC Fan Club
•Awards Banquet
•ABC's of Cross Country

This meeting is for all parents, new and veteran to the sport. We will begin with issues that impact the entire team, and then towards the end of the meeting, we will address the concerns of the new parents and discuss the sport and how it works. Please be at this meeting at least for the first topics where we will talk about fundraising and the new hoops that the district is making us all jump through to be drivers/chaperones. We have to get everyone on board here in order for our school to be in compliance. So drop me an email if you have any questions (scroll down to the bottom and click "contact Coach McCarthy" or follow the TEAM ROSTER link at left to the coaches page). See you all on Wednesday

Woodbridge Results HERE

Check out the complete results here and do some homework while you're at it. Who were the fastest runners and how did their teams do? How in the world did Arcadia AVERAGE 14:53 for each of their top 5 runners? How about the Great Oak girls averaging 17:17? Holy Cow we have some work to do. They started just like you did, and they stayed at it. For four years, improving every year with a dream in their heads to be the very best team in the state, the US, ... I'm still working on our team results and splits. They'll be up soon.

How Cool Is This?
The UC Centurion Harriers Head to My Alma Mater Estancia HS for the Woodbridge Invitational this Saturday

The 30th annual Woodbridge Classic will be moved this Saturday to Estancia High School, where, in 1982, a young Gimi McCarthy graduated after blazing many trails through the hills and bluffs of Fairview Park in and around the high school (that's the open bluff in the picture below!) DO NOT miss this classic event as we see our star runners perform against the largest fields of the states best athletes compete on a brand new and extremely flat and fast course around Estancia HS and the surrounding park. We will be meeting on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for this evening event. Also, we will be continuing our great tradition of creating a giant pot-luck table at the meet to feed our hard-working athletes throughout the night. For more intense meet information, go to 2010 on the left and click on "schedule". There you will find a link to the Woodbridge homepage. Our team information for the weekend, and a cool map of the course you'll find below. (the second picture below is me breaking 10:00 in the two mile for the first time on our home dirt track in a dual meet against Laguna Beach--yes, the same race where I came to a complete stop so I wouldn't have to lead!)

Vaquero is a Big Success for Centurion Debut

The harriers of UC had a great opening season race on Saturday at Lindo Lake Park at the Vaquero Invitational. Showcasing a strong summer training base, the Centurion runners placed seven athletes among the top ten in their respective grade-level races. Junior Riess Haslam led the day, winning the junior/senior boys division 1 race, running away from last year's champion Lee McAlister of Helix and recording the fastest time of the day. The day's highlights included many first time medalists for UC in their debut races, signaling a great start to the season for this young team.

The Season Begins This Weekend at Vaquero!

It's been a great summer, so let's go have some fun. This great 1.65 mile race (2.14 for the junior/senior boys) is flat and fast and will give us a good idea of how much work we've done, and how much we still have to do. It's a great early season showcase with zero pressure, so let's do this.

Click the Vaquero information sheet above for a printable large version. We must meet at school on Saturday at 6:10 so we can arrive at the meet with plenty of time to prepare for our first race. How did you do last year? Click HERE for the UC team results from last year, and click HERE for complete results of all races. This meet is always a great way to start the season, both for athletes and fans. We will need all the parent support we can get (as screaming fans and as drivers!)

August 27, 2010

Saturday Practice at Mission Bay 8:00 a.m.

We are off to a great start with only one week to go until our first meet at the Vaquero Invitational in Lakeside. Look for meet info in the next few days. Saturday's run will be at 8:00 a.m. (instead of the usual 8:30) at the runner's bathroom at the Information Center. Most of you have already been there and know where it is. We will have a great group Saturday, so bring a snack (for post-run) and join us for a nice run around the bay.

The 2010 Season is Here!

We have only 2 1/2 weeks until our first race at the Vaquero Invitational, and we will be ready for it. The 2010 cross country season has begun, so practices are now MANDATORY. If you have a conflict (soccer, etc.) just let me know ahead of time that you can't make it. I expect to see all of you at practice everyday. You must have the athletic forms filled out and signed by your doctor (physical) before the first race on September 4, so please arrange this as soon as possible.

All new athletes are welcome and encouraged to come out any time. It is never too late to join this great team. We will slowly build you into a champion, so come out and join the fun. Click HERE for the athletic form that your family and your doctor must fill out before September 4.

Practices continue each day at 5:00 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday are at the UCHS high school track. Tuesdays we meet at Rancho Penasquitos Canyon (PQ) and Thursdays we meet at Mission Bay at the Information Center at Clairemont Drive. Directions to PQ are below. The Saturday runs will meet in different locations and will be posted here. I look forward to seeing you all. Welcome to the team.

Remember Tyler and his sister Nicolette from Running Camp 2008 and 2009? Click on the photo to watch his interview and watch a whole bunch of other stuff, too. Look for Tyler this summer at our very own 25th Annual Sequoia Running Camp in two weeks. Oh yeah, and don't forget the meeting next Monday! (see below)

Viva La Roja!
Spanish Riders Make It Across Spain

17 Days and 585 miles across northern Spain turned out to be one tough adventure for the 12 "Spanish Riders", pounding up and down some pretty treacherous trails along the Camino de Santiago, from Somport at the border with France to Santiago de Compostela along the same pilgrimage trail launched in the third century C.E.
Of course, along the way we became huge fans of David Villa and La Roja, cheering for the local heroes right through the World Cup final. Check out the Spanish Riders Website for some great pics and a wonderful series of chronological write-ups along the "Way".

Directions to PQ Canyon:
take the 5 freeway and exit Sorrento Valley Road. At the bottom of the ramp (stop sign) you have to turn left, and then you turn right. You are now on Sorrento Valley BOULEVARD (which is different from Sorrento Valley Road). Go straight, across the train tracks, through the intersection at Sorrento Valley Road and keep going straight for about a mile, past all of the industrial office buildings. The street opens up on the left (you can see the canyon) and then turns a little to the right. The parking lot is on the right up ahead. Bring some dry extra clothes to change into right after the run and something to eat and drink too.

Running Log Central!
Including a Sample of My Marathon Training Log from 1994

Check out the sample pages from my running log from September and October 1994. I was coaching at Point Loma at the time and training for the California International Marathon which was in week #48. I made this blank in 1991 to best capture the type of training that I was doing. This is how a running log is supposed to be filled out. I will not accept a running log that only has numbers. I expect you to take responsibility for your training and document every piece of it. This will be required in order to earn membership in the mileage clubs at the end of the summer, and to travel to Minnesota in September. As I have done here, be sure to include, times for each run, mileage, summaries, any extra activities, and most importantly, how you felt each day. Don't take any short cuts here.

I have also included the week number, the dates, a running shoe mileage log, and the times of each interval     Use this blank as I have done. There is plenty of room to write everything that pertains to your training. Add blank sheets, stickies, etc. as needed.

What are we doing this summer? Check the schedules below:

Saturday Runs start this Saturday at PQ Canyon 8:00 a.m

Alright kids, the summer Saturday schedule is here. Saturday runs begin this weekend June 12 at PQ Canyon at 8:00 a.m. I expect a HUGE turnout for our team at this first event. Even if you don't need that many miles, we need to ALL be there to set the team in motion as we begin our great training plan for the upcoming 12 weeks. You've all talked the talk, now it's time to walk the walk. Let's get our team mentality off to a great start. We are off to a great start.

May 20, 2010

Guess what kids? It's time to sign up for the Rock and Roll Marathon water station again this year, and we're going to make this a ton of fun. The course has changed and we are on FIESTA ISLAND, which is a great place. We will be at 20.7 miles, so the runners will just be hitting the proverbial "WALL" and we're just the people to build that wall for them! So let's do it again. I'm going to need some great engineers to help build this thing, and we have to do it low budget all the way. IMPORTANT: sign up for the water station by clicking on the guitar below. It'll take you about 30 seconds. This is extremely important this year that EVERYONE sign up before next Friday May 28. After that date you will NOT get a T-Shirt. So I need all of you to sign up, even if you're not sure you can make it. This will at least guarantee us/you the shirt and other goodies.

I need some leaders to emerge for this great event to help make this one of the greatest marathon waterstations in history. We will be having a water station meeting in the yearbook room at lunch next Tuesday or Wednesday.

Eastern League Prelims and Finals This Week

The championship phase of our season is upon us with the Eastern League Prelims beginning this Tuesday at Mira Mesa High School starting at 4:30 p.m. The best in the league will be running, jumping, and throwing their way into the finals taking place on Friday at Cathedral Catholic High School beginning at 3:00 p.m. This is a great meet that begins the qualifying process for the CIF Championships and ultimately the State Meet in Fresno. Come on out to Mira Mesa Tuesday afternoon to cheer on UC's best. We have a great well-rounded group that begins it's quest for a CIF podium spot as well as individual glory along the way.

Jaguar Invitational Today at Valley Center High School

Today will be a great chance for some of our up-and-coming athletes to showcase their progress as we take on some of north county's best athletes at the newly renovated oval at Valley Center HS. Running events for the distance crew begin at 9:30 with our 1600 meter runners and concludes at about 1:00 p.m.

Click HERE for directions to Valley Center HS

Map to Trabuco Hills High School

Click at left for directions to the high school. This will be a great event for all of us as we all plan to run our very best tonight. If you have them, bring 3/16" or 1/4" pyramid spikes (not the needles). I will see how many I have.

See you all at 2:15 p.m. at UCHS

(The map is a little messed up. Skip the part going all the way up to Seattle! We'd miss our race)

Track Practice at 8:30 a.m. This Week

See you at the track for this week's wonderful array of track workouts that we have in store for you. Tuesday will be our toughest day of work, so prepare yourselves mentally and physically (eat and sleep a little extra) to succeed all week. We will be meeting at Mission Bay on Wednesday at the playground at 9:30 (Yes! an extra hour of sleep) for a long run and then our annual track team picnic/barbeque and capture the flag game. Bring a side dish and a drink for the picnic (everyone bring something this time!).

This Friday is our fantastic annual trek to the Trabuco Hills Invitational Distance Carnival, one of the best meets of the season for our entire group. In the cool evening under the lights, expect to fly and run the fastest race of your life. We will be having another of our famous pot-lucks at trackside, so sign up with the captains to bring a salad, fruit, or any or all the fixin's to build the best sandwiches on Earth. I'll bring the Gatorade.

Last year half the team almost froze to death because they didn't bring a jacket. We will be running until after 10:00 at night and it WILL be cold, so bring all of your warmups, extra jackets, blankets... EVERYTHING!

Our first race is at 4:46 p.m. which means that we need to be there by 3:45 which means we need to leave by 2:30, which means we need to MEET AT UC AT 2:15. Easy math. Don't be late. Let's have a great week.

March 8, 2010

Track Schedule 2010 is HERE!
Yeah, I know. "It's about time!" The first three weekend meets will be extremely exciting and important for the distance crew. San Clemente is one of the few meets where everyone gets to participate, so take advantage of this. You will run FAST and have a great time doing it. Mt. Carmel the week after is more of an elite "invitational" where you will need to have a reasonably fast qualifying mark to get in. Some of our athletes already have very quick marks from last year, so we'll count on these as the season just gets under way. For the rest of us without great marks yet, we need to get them and there will be no better place to do it than the Trabuco Hills Distance Carnival on FRIDAY April 2. We will again turn this meet into a great team pot-luck event extravaganza. Everyone participates in races that are seeded (meaning you only run against athletes that are the same speed as you!) that always generate outstanding times. It's a great meet "under the lights" on Friday evening so plan on bringing your family and a food item (captains will coordinate) to make this a wonderful evening of track races.

Saturday Run at San Elijo 8:00 a.m.
February 27, 2010

Take I-5 north to Lomas Santa Fe. Exit Lomas Santa Fe and turn left (west towards the ocean). Continue west and then down the hill. Turn right at N. Cedros. Continue north past the Solana Beach train station and park in the farthest north end of the train station parking lot. The run begins from there and heads into the San Elijo preserve heading east and into Rancho Santa Fe. This is definitely one of the best runs in San Diego County, so don't miss this. We will attempt to continue our Saturday run schedule at different locations around the county as long as we have no meets on Saturdays. See you tomorrow.

Saturday Run at Blue Sky!
Feb 13, 2010 at 8:00 a.m.

This is definitely one of the most beautiful trail runs that we do all winter/summer. We are all in great shape and need to continue our Saturday runs and maintain our WEEKLY MILEAGE. To get to Blue Sky, take I-15 north and exit Rancho Bernardo Road. Go east until you get to Valle Verde. We are meeting at the park on the left at the corner of Rancho Bernardo Road and Valle Verde. 8:00 a.m sharp

Mac Fleet Runs 1:49 in his first collegiate 800 at the UW Indoor.

Pretty cool. The kid runs down two Stanford teams to give his team the lead for good. Not a bad first race. Check out the video.

Happy New Year!

I am happy to report that I have purchased a new computer after my little homeowner misadventure, so I'm back in business. This website needs to be straightened out some, and you can expect to see some changes in the new year. A new look is on the horizon with new and simpler links, better archives, a much more user-friendly interface with your every day needs in mind. Sound cool? Stay tuned. In the meantime, there will be new updates on happenings in and around the running group this winter. Keep training and keep following us on this great journey that running gives us every day. It's a new year, so set some outstanding goals both short and long term, and lets get to work.
