CIF Championships

Riess Haslam is CIF Individual Champion!

Haslam Joins Selective Greats in UC History

Senior Riess Haslam ran away with the division 3 CIF individual honors at Morley Field yesterday to put an exclamation point on the first race of the championship season when he ran away from El Capitan's Daniel Gomez on the final climb up the Upas Street hill. Riess took a look around and with a great late-race surge after the tough hill, put 100 meters on Gomez to seal the division 3 title. Next up, Riess will join junior Sophi Volk at the State Championships this weekend in Fresno where he'll vie for top individual honors in the state. Riess now joins past greats Riley Booker (2005) and Mac Fleet (2008) as CIF champions for UC. Both Booker and Fleet went on to win individual state titles.

3rd League Meet

Boys and Girls Teams Rout Serra!

This is the way to do it! Hold out an athlete or two to train and recover and let the younger athletes step up and cover the course for the team. That's just what juniors Dan Cunningham and Ben Phillips did for the boys, and freshman Ann Kelly did for the girls along with her entire supporting cast. Both teams dismantled the Serra varsity squads for a decisive win. Be sure to check out your results below (click for a full size PDF). Also included are the Cathedral Catholic results from two weeks ago.

2nd League Meet

Boys and Girls Teams Run Up Against Cathedral!

Both teams ran with a lot of heart and gave the Cathedral Dons a good race. Riess Haslam, together with Cathedral's top runner, towed the lead pack through the first mile at 5:00 flat and kept the heat on throughout the next two miles. Riess closed with a 5:07 last mile to smoke the field, winning in 15:41 for the 3.05 mile course. Dan Cunningham followed in 5th with a great PR of 16:26, keeping the race competitive from the start. In the girls race, a lead group of 15 runners roared through the first mile in 6:12 and kept pressing into the second mile. When the pack emerged from behind the velodrome and the dust began to clear, Jessy Hansen and Megan Gramlich had taken command of the race and would not relinquish their 1-2 hold on the lead. Both would stick close to the finish, carrying the torch (cowbell?) for UC. The Cathedral Dons roared back this day, filling in many key spots for a sound victory.

UC Cross Country Honors a Great Man

Steve Jobs changed our lives. Every day we listen, we watch, we create, we dream, much the way that he wanted us to dream. Our music is with us everywhere, we build websites, we create movies like professionals, we blog, we chat, we text. Every minute, it seems, we use an Apple device that makes our lives richer, bolder, and much more colorful. There is no going back to the days of analog phones, T-squares, adding machines, cassette recorders, or 8 millimeter film splicers. Our digital world at home and in our schools will never forget Steve Jobs. Thank you for what you've done for us and our children.

First League Competition: This Just In!

Boys and Girls Varsity Teams Beat La Jolla, St. Augustine and OLP!

The actual score sheets are copied below. congratulations to everyone that ran well representing UC today. This was a great way to show off 100 great athletes in UC colors. Check out the race results below. I will have race details and archived information put together by tomorrow on this site for you to see how well you have improved. I am thrilled to see so many kids run well for their first time on the Morley Field course. Pictures are on the way.

JV Girls

Despite a few glitches finding their way around the course, these girls ROCKED IT! What a way to start things off!

JV Boys

In a much tougher field and with their ranks severely reduced, the novice boys struggled a bit, but came away with good early-season marks.

Varsity Girls

Pack running destroyed our opponents! This is the way to do it. Outstanding focus on the team concept will work well at CIF.

Varsity Boys

Some great moves in the middle of the race kept them "in it". One great move by one runner won it for us. Was that you?

Great Stanford Pics

Admiring Rodin

One of the great trips of all time, the UC Cross Country Team just returned from a fantastic 3-day weekend in the San Francisco bay area, including a break-out performance by our young team at the Stanford Cross Country Invitational on Saturday on the Stanford Campus. And what trip to this storied university would be complete without a visit to the legendary Rodin Sculpture Garden, featuring the "Gates of Hell", inspired by Dante's Inferno? A short walk deeper into the campus center brought us to the chained figures of the "Burghers of Calais", a landmark piece by Auguste Rodin. Click the photo at left to see Jennifer Haslam's great pics of the trip to get a good overview of just how great the trip was.

Vaquero Results and Pictures!

We had a great day at the Vaquero Invitational on Saturday with some super surprise showings from the some of our newest stars. It was a perfect showcase to let the legs roar after a long summer of many, many miles of running. Results are here, including the divisions two and three races which took place after we were done. Click the large photo of the lake to see results for each race. Click on our runners below that and you'll see Jennifer Haslam's great photos of the day. I am very encouraged with these results. Our team is strong, and we now know where we need to improve to take us up one more notch (or perhaps two!).

A Picture Perfect Place to Open the Season

Morley Field Page Is Looking Good!

This page should be up and running by this afternoon. Just remember that we are meeting on Monday at Morley Field at 8:30 in the morning. This is a KEY workout for the week, so don't miss this (unless you already told me you couldn't make it). Great job in the races today. I will have results and photos, and even a video up as soon as I get it all. I'm thrilled for our team and proud of you all. Stay tuned. Meanwhile, check out the new Morley Field link on the left.

This Video is Too Cool to Ignore!
Somehow I'm going to keep this video as a permanent inspiration for hard work, determination, and just down right coolness. Watch this over and over again like I do.
