UC Travel Information:

We will meet at UC at 7:00 a.m. on Friday, November 29. From UC, we travel to lovely Gorman, CA (where the season usually starts on our way to camp in August!) to eat breakfast here at the relatively new Ranch House Restaurant.

From here we travel to Woodward Park, Fresno, arriving around 2:00 p.m. Here we pick up meet information, jog around the course, buy whatever State Meet "goodies" we deserve (bring some $$. They don't give this stuff away!), and then laugh and relax as we go over any pre-race instructions we may have forgotten about.

After we leave the park, we'll head to the Holiday Inn to check in and relax before dinner. I will stop in at Luna's Italian Restaurant in Clovis and bring a wonderful dinner to the hotel where we'll eat in the lounge (yes, I did get hotel approval on this). Luna's is a great place that we've gone to every year. This time, the owner offered me a dinner package I couldn't turn down.

After dinner, the coaches (and support personnel) will be heading out to arguably the most important event of the weekend: The Unofficial Official Coaches Meeting here.

Saturday Race time: 12:20

1101 North Grand Avenue
Walnut, CA 91789

UC Travel Information:

We will be leaving immediately after school (or as close to it as possible) on Friday, December 6 and heading to Fairview Park in Costa Mesa, right on the edge of my alma mater, Estancia High School, the site of this year's Woodbridge Invitational. Here we will do our necessary shake-out run, strides, and stretching.

From here we head to the home of Steve and Tere Ross (my Mom) just down the hill. Be prepared for another epic Cranium battle.

Get Ready! It's Coming

Click on the Footlocker logo at the top to see the official website for race times and entry information. We will have to get up pretty early to get to the meet on time (my mom lives 40 minutes from the course). Remember the "double secret" free parking area in the neighborhood behind the course.

We should be home between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Does anyone still want to run who hasn't signed up yet? Registration went up on Sunday, from $15 to $40, but if you still want to run, it's worth it. You will need to register online (from site link/logo above). You don't want to miss the potentially epic Cranium match Friday night.

Good Luck!

Check This Out (click headline below--here's how our teams compare in UC history)

Congratulations to the boys and girls teams for a great day at the CIF Championships at Morley Field on Saturday. The girls ran a strong team race to finish 6th out of the 17 teams in division 3, and the boys kept the team very close together to qualify for the State Championships by finishing 2nd place out of the 19 division 3 teams that began the day.

Next up: The boys will travel to Fresno on Friday to prepare for race day on Saturday at Woodward Park. I will have more details and an itinerary on this website by Monday. Please contact Connie Culp if you are interested in one of the six hotel rooms that we have available for parents. Stay tuned. Much more coming very soon!

Boys Are League Champions! Girls Second

(Sherri Cortez Photos)

All four teams ran extremely well on Thursday to highlight a phenomenal season for the Centurion cross country squad. Taking the lead just before the first mile, sophomore Sebastian Rodriguez capped his season with his third win in a row, taking the Eastern League JV Championship in a PR 17:51. The boys varsity team followed the JV race and put on a performance for the ages, scoring only 19 points, putting eight runners in the top nine. Victor Bennett, in control from the start, kept his team together virtually throughout the race before speeding off for the win and tying his season best 16:17.

The next seven Centurion runners would finish within 39 seconds for a dominating victory. The girls varsity team ran their best races of the season to finish second place in the league standings and notch several new PR's on the Morley Field layout. Ann Kelly led the team in second with a season PR of 19:26, followed closely by Shilah Stanford with a huge 7th place finish in 20:23, her best time of the season. Amy Sovinsky led her JV team to a 3rd place team finish with her 4th place individual finish. Congratulations! It was a wonderful day for the entire team. Be sure to check out the great photos and results.

League Finals This Thursday!

(See the league time schedule at left)

Parents and fans, don't miss this great series of races at Morley Field beginning at 2:00 p.m. with the Boys JV Championship. Athletes: Check out the results from each of the last four Morley Field Western League meets to see what you need to do to run your very best. The mile and 2 mile splits are all there. Who will you run with? Girls info coming up tomorrow.

Boys Score Big Win vs. Cathedral

(click above to see Vic Bennett's great pics of the day)

The boys dominated on a Spooktacular day. The lead pack rolled much faster through the mile (5:06) in order to up the game a little bit before the big competitions at the end of this month. After some great "seasoning" in big meets all season, the front group has formed into a formidable machine. It was great to watch. The girls, up against the 8th ranked team in the state, put up a good fight and ultimately lost, but not without some great performances and a really good look at our future as a team. Next up is La Jolla on Thursday the 7th, and then the Western League Championships on November 14 beginning at 2:00 p.m. See you all there.

Early Group/Later Group

Click the banner below for the meet schedule for Friday (there's much more information on their official site linked on the right--on their home page, click the "confirmations" tab). We will meet at school at 6:45 a.m. and plan to leave just before 7:00 a.m. This way we'll get out of the school before most of the students arrive and the parking lot begins to jam up. Because many of our races for the boys are in the later afternoon, we will coordinate a group that will leave later. This second group will leave school at 10:55. This should give us plenty of time to get to Mt. SAC and avoid most of the Friday traffic. This will also give us a little time to relax before the racing warm-up begins. Look closely at the time schedule below. Our early group is in races #1, 6, 10, 19 and the later group is in races #37, 38, 39, and the sweepstakes race #47. Thank you for all of your continued support. This will be a tremendously exciting meet. I will have more information here tomorrow and Thursday so we can coordinate who goes with which group.

In the meantime, check out these photos by Michelle Atkins that do a pretty good job of summarizing the weekend. It was a spectacular trip that will have long-lasting memories for all involved. They may not get on our site much, but we would like to send out a HUGE thank you to the coaches and families of Minnetonka High School and Edina High School for hosting our kids for the weekend.

Woodbridge Invitational is Coming Up!

Here's a quick information sheet and Google map that should begin to get us ready for the upcoming weekend. The meet has changed and should be VERY exciting, culminating in the running of the boys RATED race for us later in the evening. The course has changed because the old one ventured too near to the ferry shrimp ponds (that's right: FERRY SHRIMP PONDS). The good news is that the course is even better. It just got unveiled tonight. Check out the information sheet below with some of our very best marks over the last 23 years. Your goals begin here. Also, PLEASE sign up for something to bring for the potluck dinner on the link below. Have a great week, and look for more information in the next few days!

September 7, 2013

Wow! We got off to an amazing start this morning at the Don Bosco Tech Invitational at the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Park in super hot Irwindale. The senior girls started the morning off with Aubrey Omahen and Shilah Stanford representing the team on this very unfamiliar course. Both would perform well and set the tone for a very successful morning. Next followed the boys senior large and medium school division (we don't mess around!) and our top three, Victor Bennett, Tyler Culp, and Ryan Najera charged to a 2-10-11 finish, setting the top team marks of the day so far that would set us up well for the overall championship (top 5 times of the day). Not far behind were Jack Allbritton and Juan Pacheco. The freshmen were on deck, and emerging out of the rising heat, Alex (Buddy) Volk seemed to glide ahead of over 200 others in the race, and charged to a second place finish, one of the greatest performances of the day.
(click on photo at right to see Katie Stone's pics)

Amy Sovinsky and Katie Gomez immediately followed and both earned top 60 honors (and sweet medals) in the girls Large and Medium School Freshmen race. Next, Ann Kelly and Tiffany Tran, representing the junior girls, fought through the now unbearable and still growing heat in what would be the last race of the day.

Ann finished in a very strong 11th place, and as our junior boys lined up for the next race, the drowning noise of the steady stream of incoming ambulances signaled the end of the meet and one of our best starts as a team in many years. One word: Bummer. The junior boys and sophomore boys and girls were eager to prove to the rest of the team that they could perform at least as well, if not better, than their teammates had in earlier races.

We move on. In two weeks, we will be returning to Orange County to run in the very prestigious Woodbridge Invitational at Estancia High School, my alma mater, to really see what we can do (and to show a few other people as well!). I'll have much more information coming soon. In the meantime, enjoy these photos of the day.

Vic Bennett Wins the Fire Run!

It's hard to put into words any description of how the team ran the Fire Run this morning. The kids had been focused all week, indeed all summer, and coming into this with an enormous positive attitude that was contagious all-around, their performances were astounding! Vic Bennett led the charge, and with a final kick, won the entire race. Not to be out-done, the rest of the varsity boys rolled in not far behind in 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th and 13th. Amazing considering the field of over 1300 runners! Check out the results and photos below. This was a truly fantastic way to start our season and showcase a long summer of extremely hard training. There are many great things in store as we move forward. Thank you all for answering my cry for help at the last minute. We showed up in numbers and made a statement and a difference. You all make this team great. Ok..... Fall season 2013, here we come!

"Fake" Camp Was A Huge Success

Two words: Cuyamaca Peak! Ouch. My quads are still rebelling against any attempts at recovery. It was a phenomenal inaugural "Fake" Camp with some great events and spectacular runs. The season is officially here and our first race is TWO WEEKS FROM TODAY! Our first big test though, is next Sunday when we all line up for the End of Summer Fire Run in Pacific Beach. We need more people to sign up, so if you haven't done that yet, click the link to the right and be sure to click the "friends of University City High School" box on the registration form online. We are also going to need upwards of 20 volunteers (yeah, I know, a big number) to help with course marshalling. This will be a fundraiser and will also be a great way to give back to the running community. Please also help by signing up as many of your friends as you can.

See you all Monday for a well-deserved recovery run. Remember that practices are mandatory unless I know well in advance (not the morning of) that you have another legitimate commitment.

For all you history nuts, click on the pics above for a great history of just about everything running and racing, including some epic pictures. This is a great archive that is updated periodically, so I will have a permanent link to it. Dale and Mac are on page 40. There are also some other great pictures of Dale in his running days, as well as current high school and collegians that you will all recognize. Check it out.
