Success, Failure and the Drive to Keep Creating

Watch this great TED talk about success and striving to achieve it. It's very relevant to what we do in our training philosophy. Coming back "home" for us is focusing on the process of training, and loving it for what it is and how much reward we get for participating in it rather than the results from it. Most important is the acceptance of failure in the process and the idea of where we "rightfully live." Let me know your thoughts.

The World's Best on Our Track!

What a phenomenal and unforgettable afternoon! We had the pleasure of hosting five of the World's greatest distance runners for an informal chat and greet. Our athletes asked them thoughtful questions and the rich discussion that went on for over 90 minutes left us awed and with a memory we will not soon forget. Please thank the Competitor Group for putting this together for us. Click above to see Shannon Wilson's great photos of the afternoon. These are truly memorable pics! (left to right above: Bernard Lagat, Dejen Gebremeskel, Brenda Martinez, Tariku Bekele, Gotytom Gebreselase). Check out this great race below with Gebremeskel and Tariku Bekele:

And check out this race with all three of "OUR" great athletes:

Mt. Carmel Invitational Information

Tomorrow will be our first big local meet with several athletes qualifying for this prestigious meet. The distance crew will begin with Ryan Najera (and hopefully Tyler Culp and Niko Chapman) running the 3200 division 2 at 10:15 a.m., immediately followed by the girls 4x 800 team competing at 10:30. Contact Coaches Stone and Barnett to see if you are running the DMR tomorrow at 5:00. Unfortunately, this will depend on whether or not Tyler, Niko, and Hayden get into their individual events as alternates.

Irvine Invitational Results HERE (and on Athletic.net)

Wow! PR's were the order of the day all-around. The UC distance crew proved that all that winter training really was worth it. Beginning at 7:45 in the morning and continuing to well after 6:00 in the evening, this long day at Irvine High School was a great showcase of our team's progress. We are off to a great start and now have a new foundation to elevate our training. Translation: It's time to start running a whole lot faster. I don't anticipate any objections.

(Check out Shannon Wilson's photos of the day above)

Check Out Your Splits Here

Coach Stone put all of your splits together for you to look at and see how you're racing and learn from it. Several of you have splits that indicate that you are racing extremely well. How can I tell? Compare your first lap to your last lap. Is your last lap the fastest? It should be, so this may have to be where we focus our efforts in the next few weeks.

How radically different are they from start to finish, particularly in the longer races? Obviously, if you can manage to keep your splits pretty even, you will maximize your effort and achieve great results. I do know that it's difficult to achieve this and doesn't always indicate a good race. Sometimes you're responding to the runners around you or the leaders.

Look at them and let's talk about them.

Track Meet Today: Clairemont/Point Loma/LJCD

Tomorrow we are hosting our very first home track meet of the season in our stadium. Entries for tomorrow are below along with the entries for the Irvine Invitational on Saturday. Be prepared for a warm day on Saturday. The meet begins at 3:30 tomorrow. Remember that we will be going out on a 4 mile run immediately after your race with a one mile Tempo pick-up in the middle. You are then all entered in the 4 x 400 (see your teams below). Immediately following that event, you will be running 6 x 200 at 10K pace with 200 jog. See coaches for split times. Please help clean up when it's all over as well. Don't make the coaches pick up your messes.

We are looking forward to a wonderful competitive season, and I've never seen a more fit group of athletes after training hard all winter. Congratulations on a tremendous winter effort. Bring your egos to the track and let's show people what we've trained for!

Yes, I said 5:30. Get some sleep tonight (Thursday) so we are rested and ready on Saturday. After the 1600 meter early crew, groups of athletes will come up throughout the day. If you are competing Saturday in a later race and have no ride up there or have no idea how you can get there, be sure to talk to me about it Thursday and Friday so we can arrange transportation. There will be parent drivers going up at various times of the day.

Mt. Carmel Results Are Up

This was a big week for us in our training schedule, so any great results today would be a big bonus on top of some pretty tired legs. Our kids rose to the challenge and provided many great bonuses, showcasing a phenomenal training base to lead off the season. Check out the results below. There are some great ones. It was a great meet to see where we're at and highlight the areas where we need work. Thank you all for a great meet. This was a fun and exciting start to what will be a wonderful season.
