The UCSD oval turned out to be a great proving ground again this year: Proof that UC high school track athletes can compete and win at the collegiate level. Once again we had a few outstanding marks, highlighted by the Men's 800 meter race where our own Centurions Allen Siegler and Niko Chapman finished 1-2 in a quality college heat. Allen's 1:55.74 and Niko's 1:56.90 are #2 and #4 on the UC All-Time list! Wow. Congratulations also to Hayden Stone, Alex Halter, Jacob DeMille, Bailey Stone and Renee Torre for their great performances running against the "Big Kids". Here are a few photos by Pam Kelly. Are there any more pictures out there?

Relays Set for Mt. SAC--Arcadia Huge Success!

Another great weekend at Arcadia saw some huge PR's AGAIN for our top athletes competing in the Invitational sections of the most elite track invitational in the nation. Quick summary: Ann Kelly ran a great race in the rated section of the 3200 meters, setting a lifetime PR of 11:02, making her time the third fastest in UC history. Shortly after, the boys 4x1600 with Allen Siegler, Hayden Stone, Niko Chapman, and Luke Grover ran a season best 17:57, averaging 4:29 per mile and posting the 3rd fastest team time in UC history. The following evening, Luke, Niko and Allen joined with Alec Judlin to finish a very fine 11th place in the Invitational Distance Medley Relay, running 10:21.50 and the 2nd fastest time in UC history. Easily an historic evening for our elite distance squad, and tomorrow we are set to do it all again! The Mt. SAC relays open the track season for professional runners, who join the collegians and outstanding high school athletes to make this weekend the pinnacle of the distance relay races for the season. Our boys teams will be running in the Elite 4 x Mile (yes, a full 36 meters farther this time) on Friday night, and then the Elite DMR on Saturday evening. Starting off the weekend, Allen Siegler will look for a great race in the Invitational Boys Mile, featuring many of the participants from last weeks Arcadia Invitational as well as several more of the nations best milers. Saturday will see Ann Kelly test her wheels in the Invitational 800 meters. This should be quite a weekend.

Junior Allen Siegler eyes the competition before the Stanford Invitational Mile Championship race two weeks ago. Allen ran a new personal best 4:19 for the full mile and will look to vastly improve on that tomorrow at the Mt. SAC Invitational. Click the Flotrack link on the left for live results during the meet.

DMR Teams full of PR's at Stanford

We had a great travel weekend at Stanford where the boys and girls DMR teams competed on Friday afternoon, followed by Ann Kelly and Allen Siegler competing in the Open Mile on Saturday morning. The Girls DMR started off the afternoon with Ann Kelly leading the initial 1200 leg and handing off near the front in a quick 3:45. Next, Ashlyn Omahen flew the 400 in 63 seconds to hand off to Bailey Stone, who clocked a season best 2:29 for the 800 meter leg. Renee Torre would anchor the team in the 1600 in what would be the UC performance of the day, bringing the team home in a HUGE PR of 5:28 for the 1600 meter leg. Her previous best for the distance was 5:46! The 12:45 total time was the fastest DMR in several years.

Next, the boys took the stage and were led off by Luke Grover, who SMOKED the initial 1200 meter leg in a huge PR of 3:11, which put us right up front. The hand off to Hayden Stone running the 400 meter leg kept us in the hunt for a top 5 finish. Niko Chapman then took leg three around the track twice for 800 meters and clocked a nice 2:01 PR. Finishing off the 1600 meter final leg, Allen Siegler put up a good fight, getting stuck in no-man's land, eventually bringing home the baton in 4th place in a fine 10:33. Allen's time of 4:26, although very respectable, was not a PR, but he would clock a nice personal best the following day in the Open Mile, running 4:19.33 for a full mile, which is 9 meters (1.6 seconds) longer than the more common 1600 meter high school race.

Check out the results HERE.

No Foolin'! Practice Today at Liberty Station 9:30

It's spring break time and our athletes are running amazing well so far this season. Today's easy practice/picnic will be at Liberty Station in the park behind the Ace Hardware. We'll do a nice easy run, drills, exercises, and then enjoy the late morning with grilled hamburgers and hot dogs with sides and drinks (you bring the side, I got the drinks). See the map below for directions.

I'll have results, pictures and other exciting information about our most recent meets up here very soon.

Point Loma, Clairemont, LJCD Results HERE

Our first home meet was a huge (and long) success that saw our distance crew notch some new PR's for the season and even a few lifetime bests. With four schools and lots and lots of heats, the meet went well after 7:00 p.m., but that didn't deter almost the entire team from participating in the evening's final event, the 4 x 400 meter relay. Check out the results above and Bailey Stone's great pics from the day.

We have a tough week coming up, so rest up, eat well and prepare yourselves for some great performances.

Irvine Invitational Results HERE

Despite the NASTY heat wave that struck the Irvine track facility all day Saturday, the UC distance crew came away with some pretty formidable early season marks to open up our invitational season. Check out the results above (coming soon) and then look at your splits below. The best runners learn with each race for a much better progression towards your goals by the end of the season. A special congratulations go out to Luke Grover who ran a spectacular 3200 meter race, finishing 4th in the Invitational Heat with a huge PR of 9:41 (and the track was over 95 degrees!).

Check Out Your Splits Here

Coach Stone put all of your splits together for you to look at and see how you're racing and learn from it. Several of you have splits that indicate that you are racing extremely well. How can I tell? Compare your first lap to your last lap. Is your last lap the fastest? It should be, so this may have to be where we focus our efforts in the next few weeks.

How radically different are they from start to finish, particularly in the longer races? Obviously, if you can manage to keep your splits pretty even, you will maximize your effort and achieve great results. I do know that it's difficult to achieve this and doesn't always indicate a good race. Sometimes you're responding to the runners around you or the leaders.

Look at them and let's talk about them.

Irvine Invitational Tomorrow!

It's been a wonderful winter of training and more training, and tomorrow we're off to the races. The season kicks off with our first big invitational at Irvine High School, one of the largest meets in Orange Country with many of the best athletes from the region. This will be a great test for us to showcase our current fitness as well as what's to come, and I know we are all very excited. Here is some information below
