One of the great moments in UC girls team history, the team leads the pack at the half mile point of the 1998 CIF championship race at Morley Field. The girls (l to r: senior Carly Votolato, soph Talisha Clophus, junior Katherine Ziegler, soph Chessa Adsit-Morris, soph Laura Cohen, senior Leslie Crews, and junior Rebecca McKeown-behind Leslie) went on to win the first ever CIF title for the Lady Centurions. This team set the standard for what would be the first of six CIF titles and numerous runner-up finishes in the years to come.
Each runner in this group was in her own right a superstar. Both Katherine and Talisha won their huge frosh-soph races at Woodbridge as sophs, and would go on to be Masters meet finalists in the 1600 and 800 in the spring. Katherine was our "pioneer" miler, flying to a great 5:05.27 as only a sophomore. In 2003, Katherine Ziegler became our first inductee into the UC Cross Country Hall of Fame. Carly became the first girl to crack 19:00 at Woodbridge (back when the course was a little more difficult than the current one), Chessa would eventually finish fourth in the 2001 masters meet 3200, just missing a state berth. She later went on to a great running career at the University of Washington. Laura Cohen went on to four great years at Chico State University graduating in 2006. During her tenure there, she would finish as an NCAA All Western Region (top 15) in cross country and help her team to a fourth place finish at the NCAA National Championships. In track she captured the 2005 CCAA Championship in the women's 10,000 meters. |
